"When I thought that I couldn't reach my goals, Rebecca always supported me and kept me going. I want to thank Rebecca for helping me to reach my potential." Paige (Counselling Participant)
We all experience personal challenges or issues in our lives. There are times when issues may be too much to manage and seeking support and strategies from can be beneficial. If you are experiencing difficulties (for example aspects of identity, spirituality, relationships with self and others, past experiences, parenting, grief and loss, trauma, domestic violence, child abuse, use of alcohol and other substances, depression, anxiety, and other mental health concerns) I can support you (as an individual, couple, family or group) to address problems in a positive and respectful way by empowering you to clarify issues, explore options, develop strategies and increase self awareness. Changes facilitated by therapy may include a change in perspective, new insight, new ways of thinking about situations, new awareness of feelings, enhanced capacity to tolerate and regulate feelings, new actions or behaviours and new decisions about life. This may include:
- Holistic assessment (active questioning combined with engagement and rapport building)
- Therapeutic alliance (built on the core conditions of empathy, unconditional positive regard and congruence)
- Case formulation (for a shared understanding of the presenting problem and the need for change as well as new ways of thnking about the presenting problem)
- Collaborative decision making and goal setting (including suitable inteventions to address presenting issues and their impacts)
I support the whole person (including cognition, emotion, expression, somatic, developmental, relationships, behaviour learning and social systems) and utilise skills of empathy, genuineness, authenticity, congruence, and offering a non-judgmental presence, and in building rapport and trust, reflective listening (including reflections of content and feeling), attuning to verbal and non-verbal cues, paraphrasing, summarising and interpreting. It is important that you feel safe, understood, respected and accepted and that you are an active participant in the counselling process at every stage. My approach is integrative, which refers to the implementation of a variety of evidence based approaches in order to meet needs. There is evidence that acceptance and commitment therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, couples counselling, expressive arts therapies, family therapies, humanistic-experiential therapies, interpersonal therapy, mindfulness based cognitive therapy, motivational interviewing, narrative therapy, person centred counselling, psychodynamic counselling, psychoeducation, relaxation strategies, skills training and solution focused brief therapy approaches are effective.
As a Counsellor, Psychotherapist and Social Worker, my focus is on building a genuine therapeutic and trusting relationship and actively and empathetically listening to you (as an individual, couple, family or group) in order to promote your mental health and wellbeing, enhance your self-understanding and to resolve identified concerns. Remember that no issue is too big or too small to ask for support. Most of my services are conducted face to face but I also provide online and telephone counselling.
Counselling focuses on specific problems, changes in life adjustments and fostering wellbeing.
Psychotherapy is concerned with the restructuring of the personality or self and the development of insight.
Social Work is about assisting with and improving human wellbeing and identifying and addressing any external issues (known as system or structural issues) that may impact on wellbeing or may create inequality, injustice and discrimination.
